Most executives think their companies need to improve their supply chain agility, ICRON survey shows
Amsterdam, 17 July 2018 – More than half of supply chain executives think their supply chains are only “moderately agile” or “not agile at all”, according to the results of a survey released today by ICRON, a leading provider of Optimized Decision Making and Supply Chain Optimization software solutions. The survey – taken by over 100 supply chain executives at the 20th annual EMEA Supply Chain & Logistics Summit & Expo last month in Amsterdam – showed that 49% of respondents think that their supply chains are “moderately agile” and nearly 6% view their supply chains as “not agile at all”. Only 10% said their supply chains are “fully agile”, while 35% reported that their supply chains are “very agile”.
Alfred den Besten, ICRON’s Chief Marketing Officer, remarked: “Supply chain agility – the ability to rapidly and effectively handle unexpected events, disruptions, and volatile fluctuations in supply and demand to ensure ongoing productivity and profitability – is an essential ability in today’s challenging, consumer-centric business environment. The fact that most supply chain executives think that their supply chain agility is lacking is alarming, and underscores the need for solutions that enable this crucial capability.”
When asked whether their company is more “planning-oriented” or “decision-oriented”, 43% said that their company is “mainly decision oriented” and 12% reported that their company is “fully decision-oriented”, while 43% think that their company is “mainly planning-oriented” and 2% said their company is “fully planning-oriented.
“Interestingly, we see more and more companies adopting a decision-oriented operational approach (as opposed to the traditional planning-oriented approach),” den Besten added, “One of the key aims of this decision-oriented approach is to enhance supply chain agility – by giving planners and key stakeholders the ability to quickly make the best possible business decisions in the face of unforeseen events and disruptions. In a nutshell, by improving your decision making, you can improve your supply chain agility.”
